Introduction

Prospectus Background: Govt. Degree College Mathra came into being in May, 2001 in the old Elementary college building at Mathra. It is situated at the distance often kilometers from Peshawar in the historic town of Mathra. Mathra is the name of two important places one in India and the other in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Peshawar Pakistan. Mathra is a Sanskrit word that means "Mith, Kushtun (Kill)". "Ra" means "Rakshas (wild men)". In short Mathra means a place where so many Rakshas have been killed. It is interesting that there are many places having the same names both in Pakistan as well as in India like Mathra which is a famous city also there in India, known for the birth place of Krishan and Kanhayya. A famous city located on the bank of River Jamna, a holy place of worship for Hindus. Mathra Peshawar has a great historical background. In old nomenclature it is the Qaria of the Pargana i.e. The largest famous town of Tehsil (Daudzai). In 1200 B.C Peshawar and its suburbs were called Rova. Into the Buddhisit era this whole valley was called Budhia. Hazrat Sannan Bin Mahbaq Hazli R.A was the first Sahabi Rasul who came here after the defence of Bannu & Kohat and he along with his companions were martyred there. Their collective grave is the first Ganj-e-Shaheedan in the history of this area which is situated in a nearby place known as Chaghar Matti. Mathra has produced many famous people of great caliber.
