Introduction

Udyana, present day Swat, means “garden” or “park like” remained once a great seat of learning and civilization in ancient times. Swat has its own culture and a rich history from time immemorial.

The people of Swat elected Miangul Abdul Wadood (Bacha Saib) as the king of Swat in 1917 who was succeeded by his son Miangul Abdul HaqJahanzeb (WaliSaib) in 1949. MiangulJahanzeb took the valley to its zenith of progress in the field of education. He established a network of Schools and Colleges across the State territory. The State era’s school and college buildings are the living examples in the urban and rural Swat.

With the passage of time growing demands at the intermediate and degree level education could not be met by the then colleges in the valley, so the Government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa established Government Degree College Mingora in 1995. Professor Abdul Wadood performed his duties as the first principal. Initially, it catered to the needs of the students at Degree level only while FSc classes were started in 1998 followed by B.Sc. Computer Sciences in 2001.

Professor Javaid Iqbal took the charge of the college as the second principal on May 31^st, 1997 with a firm zeal to bring the college at par with the leading institutions of the province. The college owes its great success to his team work and commitment. The college was shifted to the city of Mingora in 1997.

The contributions of Dr. Mian Said Wahid (September 1, 2003- September 22, 2004), Prof. Zarin Muhammad (October 1, 2005-July 10, 2006), Prof. Muhammad Iqbal (September 16, 2006- May 15, 2008) and Prof. KhurshidAshari (June 21, 2008- August 25, 2009) and Professor FazaliSubhan Afghani (August 26, 2009 – January 9, 2011) and Prof: Muhammad Ayaz (May 7, 2011 – October 10, 2011), Riaz Ahmad ( November 1, 2011 to July 25, 2012) and Dr. Ghulam Muhammad ( July 26, 2012 – June 3, 2015) are worth mentioning.

Government Degree College Mingora has an academic atmosphere, provides a congenial environment for teaching and learning. The classroom environment is based on participatory approach to nourish well the young minds of the college. The students get a sound launching paid to start their careers in a best successful way.

The institution believes in effective communication between staff of the college, students and their parents. Parents of students of the college are frequently contacted to inform them about the academics of their children at the college.

The aim of the college is to impart quality education which would help produce disciplined citizens and to develop various positive facets of their personality with particular emphasis on character building. It would enable them to become responsible citizens.

The setting Principal Professor Riaz Ahmad has been performing his duties with zeal and zest. He has the vision of an educated society for the valley of Swat with the mission of educating the generation next in such a way which will help them onwards to compete nationally and globally.
