College History
Government College No. 1 is the mother institution as regards Higher Education in the province. It was founded in 1921 as VB (Veedek Brothery) College. This college was affiliated with Punjab University before the foundation of University of Peshawar. Famous and renowned educationists Mr. Faiz Mohammad, Qureshi Ahmad Ali Sadiq, Abdur Rashid Matta and their colleagues taught voluntarily and worked hard for the development of the college. In 1948, Government of KPK (then NWFP Government) introduced Science subjects at intermediate level and Arts subjects at degree level. In 1955, Science subjects were introduced at the degree level as well.
It is an honour for Government College No. 1 that in the early days of the newly founded country, students from as far as Bannu, Kohat, Tribal Areas, Zhob, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffar Garh, to name a few, studied at this very college. As awareness for Higher Education increased among the public post graduate classes in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics and Statistics were started in 1965. In this way, the mother institution provided the groundwork for the establishment of Gomal University Dera Ismail Khan.
The college building consists of old and new blocks. New Classrooms and laboratories were constructed from time to time to accommodate the growing number of students. There are separate blocks for different departments like Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science etc.
