Introduction

In the center of the unrivaled city stands the prestigious institution of Govt Postgraduate College No. 1 Abbottabad It is a tower of learning which has been spreading its light for more than half a century. This College was established in 1944 in a rented building on Mansehra Road. After independence, its site was shifted to the heart of the city in Araya School. In 1954 the Honorable Chief Minister of the N-W.F.P (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) Abdul Qayyum Khan laid foundation stone of the present magnificent building at link road. The building has large, spacious and ventilated classrooms, well equipped science laboratories. Since then the College has rapidly progressed.

In 1966 the college started M.Sc Physics and MA Economics Classes. In 1973 MA Classes in the subject of English, Urdu and M.Sc classes in Chemistry and Mathematics were started. In 1986 M.Sc Botany and MA Political Science department were added. In 1999 M.Sc Computer Science was started. In 2010 MA History was further added at postgraduate level. Now it is rightly called a mini university. The College provides quality education to almost five thousand students from 11th grade to 16th grade in 27 common subjects in science and arts. Female students are admitted only to MA/ M.Sc and BS classes in a separate block.

To make Government college self sufficient in providing university level modem education aiming at ensuring promising career for students in and outside the country, a revolutionary semester based 4-years bachelor degree program called as bachelor of studies (BS) has been launched in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science. Physics, Economics, Botany. Political Science. GIS & H.P.E.

The newly initiated program has been started to benefit the talented students with meager sources of income without discrimination. This will also help eliminate class difference in society. The B.S four year program is an evening program with classes after 12 noon. It encourages talented students to pursue line of studies compatible with international education system. The outstanding students studying in this program are given scholarship based on their academic performance in later semesters. Admissions are open to both male and female candidates in this program purely on merit.

At present College is offering education facilities at Intermediate, Bachelors, Masters and BS levels. There are 11 Master degrees departments namely: Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics. Statistics, English. Political Science, Islamiyat. History and Urdu.

The departments offering BS degree program are: Botany, Computer Science, Chemistry, Economics, English, G.I.S, H.P.E, Mathematics, Physics and Political Science, Urdu, History & Pakistan Studies.
