Dargai is the Headquarter of Sam-Ranizai Tehsil of District Malakand. Its name has been derived from Pashto word “Dara-Gai”, which means small pass. The unrivalled beauty of Dargai valley and its paramount importance cannot be put into words explicitly, partly because the world of imagination cannot substantiate the world of reality and partly because of the limited available space here.
The River Swat breaks its way through tunnel in Malakand Mountains at Jabban to feed 3 hydroelectric power stations i.e., Jabban, Dargai, and Malaknad-III. The same water further irrigates thousands acres of fertile land through a network of canals. The crops and fruits produced in the area hold countrywide popularity for quality and taste.
District Malakand was unfortunately left on the mercy of circumstances. It remained backward for quite a long time before and after independence in terms of human resource and material development in general, and education in particular.
The long awaited, but continuous struggle of the philanthropist, far-sighted, and devoted elders of the area bore fruits when they were able to convince the government to establish an intermediate college in Sam-Ranizai Tehsil, which was inaugurated on 1st July 1977. It heralded a joyous daybreak to end the long night of ignorance and illiteracy. This momentous news proved as a great beacon light of hope to the fortune-stricken and neglected people of the area.
The college was upgraded to degree level and, thus, the long standing demand of the elders was realized on 1st August 1983. Since then, building, staff, students, and faculties have multiplied many times over.
The subject of Computer Science was introduced from the year 2002 onwards to equip the students of the area with the latest skill and techniques of information and communication. The sole aim of the induction of the new subject was to prepare the generation of today to face the challenges of the future in a more befitting manner in this new millennium of science and technology.
The total area of the college is 36 acres. Its magnificent, sprawling and double storey building can be seen on the road that links Dargai Bazar to Wartair. The marvelous building gives extra touch to the scenic beauty and has augmented the architectural charm of the college.
There is a variety of plantation inside the college boundary which has provided shelter and natural habitat for wildlife and enhanced the aesthetic charm of the premises.
The BS (4-year) program has been introduced in the prevailing education system to enhance the basic knowledge of the young scholars and to bring it in parity with the modern standard of international level. In order to cope with the rising challenges, the BS program has been launched in the discipline of Computer Science, English, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Political Science. It will be extended to other faculties with the passage of time to keep this institution abreast with the latest development in global academic arena.
All these arrangements would encourage the poor but talented students of this area to get Higher Education at their doorstep, and that too at nominal expenses as compared to the high expenses of far off public or private Higher Education Institutions of the country. The students are provided high standard academic facilities through multi-media under the close supervision of a galaxy of renowned teachers. Uncountable students graduated from this august institution have been showing outstanding performances in their respective fields of services.
The College has a very good reputation and is a nursery for professional colleges i.e. Medical, Engineering, Science, Humanities and Arts. In recognition of the outstanding performances the students of this College have been awarded with Laptops and Distinction Certificates. The time is not far when the college will be granted degree awarding status by the high ups.
